Youth Cup day of drama in Stenhousemuir

Dundee United Community Trust, Glasgow Girls and Bayside have won the ScottishPower 14s, 16s and 18s Youth Challenge Cup after a set of thrilling finals at Ochilview Stadium in Stenhousemuir.

In the first game, Youth Performance League leaders Glasgow Girls lifted the 16s cup after a 3-1 victory over Musselburgh Windsor thanks to a brace from Rebecca Scally after Charley Rankin’s opener and Eve Innes scoring for Musselburgh early in the second half.

The 14s final was decided by the same scoreline for Dundee United over Inverness Caledonian Thistle, despite some heroics from Highland keeper Fara Sutherland and a wonderful free kick by Elisa Higgins to keep the score level at half time.

United’s Mia McKenzie showed she was also capable from a set piece in the second half before Izzy McLaren scored her second to win it for the Dundonians.

The 18s final also proved to be a thriller, with Bayside taking control in the second half to secure the cup for the Fifers.

Aberdeen opened the scoring early, Lucy Strachan rising to nod home a corner before Bayside responded through Alesha Mclean then Olivia  Barclay. Aberdeen bundled in an equaliser before Jessica Sinclair gave Bayside the advantage at the break. The second half belonged to the Fifers though, who added goals from Ella Stevenson then a second for Mclean.

The ScottishPower Youth Challenge Cup is SWF’s biggest competition in numbers and scope, with over 350 teams from across Scotland taking part.
