More former Scotland players honoured
Four former Scotland Women’s National Team players have been honoured in the latest presentation night at Hampden Park for players who
represented Scotland at international level but didn't receive an official cap for their appearances.
The awards ceremony took place ahead of Melissa Andreatta’s first game in charge of Scotland against Austria in the UEFA Women’s Nations League in
May.
The players that were honoured for their contribution were Josie Cameron, Gerry Chalmers, Marion Leitch and Sheila Begbie, who was also inducted in the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.
Josie and Gerry both made one appearance for the National Team whilst Marion played in the first official match for the UEFA qualifiers in September 1982 and amassed 13 appearances. Sheila captained Scotland 11 times, whilst making 20 appearances and went on to become the Scottish FA’s Head of Girls’ and Women’s Football.
The latest awards ceremony follows the launch of the ‘Trailblazers’ initiative last month, aimed at identifying and honouring the women who represented Scotland at international level between 1972 and 1997 but didn’t receive an official cap.
These years marked a pivotal time in the development of the women’s game, and the Scottish FA remains committed to ensuring that the contributions of all players during this period are formally recognised.
This campaign is part of ongoing efforts to celebrate the history and heritage of women’s football in Scotland, and to acknowledge the trailblazers who paved the way for future generations.
More than 30 players have already received retrospective caps over the last 2 years as the Scottish FA continue on their journey to identify as many women as possible who have represented Scotland since the pioneers of 1972.
