Late goals end United hopes

Despite a gallant effort, Manchester United are out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League after Bayern Munich scored twice in the final 10 minutes to secure a 2-1 victory on the night and a 5-3 aggregate win at the Allianz Arena.

Trailing 3-2 from the first leg, Melvine Malard gave the English side hope with an early equaliser on the night, tapping home after just eight minutes following a fortunate bounce off a Bayern defender.

United were the better side in the first half and created several chances, but Bayern took control after the break and eventually broke through late on. Glodis Viggosdottir headed home a corner in the 81st minute, before Linda Dallman sealed the tie three minutes later with a powerful finish, despite Malard’s desperate clearance off the line.

The result sends Bayern Munich into the semi finals for the third time, while Marc Skinner’s side must now regroup ahead of their remaining Women’s Super League fixtures as they look to qualify for next season’s competition.

United had started brightly in their bid to become the first English team to win at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League. Malard forced an early save from Ena Mahmutovic, before capitalising on the goalkeeper’s clearance that cannoned off her own defender to score. Bayern improved significantly after half time, dominating territory and forcing United into deep defence. Phallon Tullis-Joyce produced a smart save to deny Pernille Harder, while Millie Turner made a crucial block to keep out Giulia Gwinn.

Despite the late heartbreak, Skinner’s team can take pride in their debut Champions League campaign, which ends with a quarter final exit. Bayern meanwhile will face Barcelona in the semi finals, after they completed a 6-0 victory in the second leg against Real Madrid, and a 12-2 thrashing on aggregate.
