Cup Final honour crowns Liskeard’s

season

The 2021-22 season will go down as a very memorable one for Liskeard Athletic Women FC, which has finished with a league title and national recognition for one of their players.

Liskeard Women’s season started off with an every important win against one of the leagues strongest sides, Helston Athletic who fancied their chances at winning the league, but after an end to end game, Liskeard won the game 5-4 with Chloe Willams scoring a hat-trick.

“Going on from there we went months without losing then our winning run came to an end with a big 5-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle Development,” says Liskeard manager Lee Mann. “After a lot of cup games and cancellations due to weather and Covid, it was down to the last five games. At this point we were third with Plymouth top and Feniton second, but all we had to do was win all our games to win the league.

“First up was Feniton away, we dominated the game but just couldn’t find the back of the net drawing 0-0 but still able to win the title. A week later, we played Saltash home where it was a must win game, a very tense game but another three goals from Chloe Willams and two from Ezme Wells finished the game 5-1 in our favour.”

Due to a lack of teams, the sides had to play each other three times so next up was Feniton away once again, but manager Lee Mann had learned a lot from the last game and changed the formation a little to help deal with Feniton’s CB Jess who is a very strong, quick, powerful lady. “This confused Feniton and we finished the game winning 5-0, another three from Chloe Willams and an Ezme Wells double.”

Down to the last two games, both games were against Helston, one home and one away. All the other teams have finished their games and Liskeard are second behind Plymouth. Helston came to Lux Park full of confidence after beating Liskeard in the Cornwall Cup semi finals month before.

“The game started very well with Ezme Wells scoring the first, followed by Lucy Jones scoring a brace and Chloe Willams adding two more,” recalled Mann. “Ezme ended the game with a fantastic long range finish to score her second for a 6-0 win, meaning that Liskeard were Champions with a game to go. The final match was the week after with Liskeard beating Helston again, this time 10-1.

“Over the season there were some big performances from our goalkeeper Sara Rowe, who hasn’t missed a game all season and made some big saves at key moments in big games. Signing of the season Keri-Ann Moxom played a key role with Lucy Jones, Grace O’Leary and Dani Barr in a very strong midfield, whilst Ezme Wells and Chloe Willams have been a massive part of the season with over 60 goals between them.”

Chloe Willams finished top goal soccer of the division with 35 goals in the league and 47 in all competitions. She also managed to win the Golden Ball in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, beating Manchester City star Lauren Hemp, Chloe scoring 12 times in the competition. Her reward was to carry the match ball on to the pitch at Wembley ahead of the Final between Chelsea and Manchester City.

Lee Mann is assisted by Janina Augustynowicz and John Hewitt is Coach and John Harris undertakes the task of photographer. “The key to a very successful first season as Liskeard Women is the morale and togetherness of the girls, every single player supports each other in and out of football. I have never seen a team bond like it,” he revealed.
