Warmy turn up the heat

Winchester Flyers 1 Warminster Town 3

Warminster Town put in an excellent second half display to clinch a 3-1 win over Winchester Flyers in their Southern Region League Premier Division encounter.

Deservedly trailing at the break to a Jane Yeates goal, the Wiltshire visitors stepped up their game to dominate from the restart and take the points.

Flyers produced some delightful football in the opening stages, creating several golden opportunities to build a healthy lead but were frustrated by some wayward finishing and fine goalkeeping by Abi Footner. The best save was a tip round the post from a well struck  Abi Whistler shot on 28 minutes.

Flyers' goal was a beauty, skipper Hannah Chalk powering down the left before delivering a well weighted pass for Yeates to drive home on the run on 32 minutes. Warminster did have some threatening moments especially from set pieces but the clearest chances were at the other end.

Warminster somehow survived a massive scramble in the six yard area just before the break and could count themselves fortunate to be only one behind after the first period.

The match seemed to change from the moment Maddy Brown  found space on the left to fire a low shot past Shannon White for the equalizer some ten minutes after the restart. In pouring rain, the visitors visibly grew in confidence moving the ball with pace and accuracy to either wing and delivering some dangerous crosses to stretch the home defence.

Warminster took the lead with a strong lofted Mia Blazey finish from distance which flew beyond White's dive. Flyers were far from finished however, piling on the pressure around Footner's goal, but the Warmy defence stood firm and there was no need for the keeper to repeat her first half saves.

The outcome was decided on 85 minutes when another sweeping move was well converted by Poppy Wannell from Millie Spratt's pass and the travelling players, staff and fans could celebrate a hard earned win. The teams competed fiercely throughout an exciting match which lifts Warminster into mid-table in their first season in the SRL Premier  after transferring from the South West Regional League.
