Barclays WSL

Defending champions Manchester City made it four wins from four, though they were made to work for it by a stubborn Charlton Athletic side.

Alex Greenwood's brilliant free kick ten minutes before half time proved the difference in a 1-0 victory for City, who were unable to convert any of their 18 other attempts on goal. Andree Jeglertz made six changes, with Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp starting on the bench, and despite enjoying 79% possession in the first half, the visitors struggled to break down Charlton's compact defensive structure. Sophie Whitehouse was equal to Mary Fowler's snap-shot, while Jodie Hutton went close at the other end. City introduced Shaw, Yui Hasegawa and debutante Niamh Charles with thirty minutes remaining, and although Shaw sent a late header wide, a first clean sheet of the campaign was secured by the visitors.

Victoria Pelova scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur maintained their unbeaten start with a 4-0 victory over winless Aston Villa. The summer signing from Arsenal has now scored four times in her past two starts, moving level with Manchester City's Bunny Shaw at the top of the golden boot standings. After a frustrating first half in which Caitlin Dijkstra had a close range strike cleared off the line, Spurs turned on the style after the break. Pelova tapped in Signe Gaupset's low cross on 54 minutes, then linked up with captain Drew Spence to double the lead with a left footed effort that went in off the bar. Dijkstra headed home the third, and Cathinka Tandberg wrapped up the win late on. The result moves Tottenham up to second and extends their unbeaten WSL run to a club record seven matches.

Chelsea beat Arsenal 1-0 in a feisty encounter at Stamford Bridge to continue their steady start to the season. Alyssa Thompson scored the only goal, following up after Keira Walsh's powerful strike was parried by Anneke Borbe and slotting into the roof of the net. The result leaves Arsenal trailing leaders Manchester City by seven points just four weeks into the season, with the two sides meeting next Sunday. Chelsea have won three of their opening four matches and looked comfortable defending against their London rivals, sitting back in the second half and seeing the game out as Arsenal struggled to find a response.

Alexia Putellas scored her first goal in English football as London City Lionesses continued their good start with a 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. The summer arrival from Barcelona opened the scoring on 29 minutes with a strike from the edge of the box after Brighton failed to clear. Lucia Corrales added a second in stoppage time, tapping in Delphine Cascarino's cross following a sharp counter attack. Brighton came close through Emily Murphy, who headed against the bar, and Kiko Seike who volleyed wide on the rebound. London City also hit the woodwork through Freya Godfrey's header, but the hosts dominated and cruised to their third win in four matches, moving three points behind the leaders.

Swedish duo Beata Olsson and Cornelia Kapocs helped Liverpool end a run of five consecutive home defeats in Merseyside derbies with a deserved 2-0 win over Everton. Olsson scored the fastest goal in a WSL derby between the sides, glancing a header beyond Courtney Brosnan from a corner after four minutes. Everton improved after the interval, but the better chances fell to Liverpool. Vivien Endemann rattled the bar, Natalia Ramos was twice denied, and Ruby Mace hooked a header off the line before Khiara Keating produced a smart save. Kapocs made the points safe with four minutes remaining, swivelling inside the box and firing low into the corner. It was Liverpool's first back-to-back wins over their city rivals since 2013-14.

Eva Olid claimed her first WSL victory as Manchester United manager, 2-1 against West Ham United, although her side were made to work hard by the Hammers. Elisabeth Terland's header after nine minutes set United on their way, connecting with Anna Sandberg's corner after some slack defending. West Ham could have levelled almost immediately through Kelly Gago, who headed wide from an unmarked position before curling just past the near post. Constance Picaud-Inconnu made an acrobatic save to keep out Andrea Medina's header on the stroke of half time, but Medina was rewarded for her persistence eighteen minutes from time, curling the ball into the top corner after a blocked shot. Viviane Asseyi converted a stoppage time penalty for West Ham, but United held on to extend their unbeaten record against the Hammers to 13 league matches.

Suzu Amano's dramatic 87th minute equaliser helped Birmingham City secure a point after a six-goal thriller against Crystal Palace. Birmingham took the lead after just 40 seconds when Allyson Swaby's poor pass was intercepted by Lee Geum-Min, who slipped in Oceane Hurtre to curl stylishly into the top corner. Palace equalised on the half hour mark when Sophie Baggaley allowed Shanade Hopcroft's long free kick to bounce over her head, but Hurtre restored the lead three minutes later with an exquisite finish from a tight angle. Palace drew level again through Beth England, who pounced on the rebound after Baggaley tipped Sierra Enge's chip onto the bar, before Lexi Lloyd-Smith put the visitors ahead after robbing Marie Levasseur. Birmingham ensured a share of the points when Amano swept the ball home from inside the box following a swift counter attack.
