Barclays WSL

Chelsea preserved their flawless WSL record with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Leicester City at

Kingsmeadow.

Aggie Beever-Jones continued her fine form, scoring her third goal in as many WSL matches by deftly

lifting the ball over Janina Leitzig after wriggling free in the box. Leicester’s goalkeeper kept her side in the game with superb saves to deny Erin Cuthbert and Keira Walsh, while Rosella Ayane struck the bar in stoppage time, with Emily van Egmond firing the rebound over. The match was preceded by an impeccably observed minute’s silence for former Chelsea manager Matt Beard, who tragically passed away on Saturday at 47, with fans chanting his name in an emotional 47th-minute tribute.

Chelsea are now the only team still sporting a 100% record after Manchester United and Arsenal, the other two teams to have won their first two games, battled out a goalless draw at Leigh Sports Village in a match lacking clear chances. Olivia Smith came closest, her first half effort tipped onto the bar by United’s Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Both sides struggled to impose themselves, with brief spells of pressure fizzling out.

Manchester City ended Tottenham Hotspur’s unbeaten start with a commanding 5-1 win at Brisbane Road, as debutant Grace Clinton shone with a goal and an assist. City overcame an early blow when Lauren Hemp limped off with an ankle injury, but Aoba Fujino’s rifled top corner strike sparked a first half flurry. Vivianne Miedema and Kerstin Casparij added headers before the break. Clinton, a deadline day signing from Manchester United, netted City’s fourth after coming off the bench, before setting up Laura Coombs’ stoppage time curler. Olivia Holdt’s late strike was a mere consolation for Spurs, who were denied a penalty by Lize Kop’s strong save from Khadija Shaw.

Brighton & Hove Albion secured their first WSL win of the season in a thrilling 3-1 victory over West Ham United. Caitlin Hayes headed the Seagulls in front from Fran Kirby’s corner, and Kiko Seike doubled the lead with a clinical finish before half time. West Ham fought back after the break, with Viviane Asseyi converting a penalty following Ffion Morgan’s foul. However, Rosa Kafaji restored Brighton’s two-goal cushion with a sublime curled effort. Seike hit the post late on, but Marisa Olislagers sealed the win with a long range strike that flew in off the bar.

Newly promoted London City Lionesses celebrated their first ever WSL victory, defeating Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park on Friday night. Isobel Goodwin was the hero, scoring twice — first rifling into the roof of the net from a 13th minute corner, then firing in from Nikita Parris’ cut back just before the hour. Everton pulled one back through Yuka Momiki’s penalty after a clumsy challenge by Jana Fernandez, but London City held firm to claim a historic three points.

The other match between Aston Villa and Liverpool was called off as a mark of respect following the sudden passing of Matt Beard on Saturday. Tributes to the former Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham United, Millwall Lionesses, Bristol City and Burnley boss were observed, alongside a minute’s applause for former Sheffield United player Maddy Cusack, marking the second anniversary of her passing.
