United go through to group stage

Manchester United Women secured their historic first entry into the Women’s Champions League group stage with a

commanding victory over Norwegian side Brann, driven by Elisabeth Terland’s sensational hat-trick at Leigh Sports Village.

After last week’s chaotic first leg defeat, where a 1-0 loss was compounded by players’ boots going missing hours before kick off, United delivered a polished performance to overturn the deficit. Marc Skinner’s side, with boots firmly in place, dominated from the outset, showcasing their intent to make history.

Terland opened the scoring just nine minutes in, capitalising on a defensive error to fire home a first time strike in the box. Four minutes later, she doubled United’s lead, nodding in from a corner.

The Norwegian striker nearly completed her hat-trick before the break, striking the post, but she sealed her treble in the 63rd minute, racing through one-on-one and calmly slotting past Brann goalkeeper Selma Panengstuen.

United’s emphatic performance was never seriously challenged by Brann, securing their place in Friday’s group stage draw alongside English rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. Having navigated past PSV, Hammarby, and now Brann in qualifying, this victory marks a significant milestone for the club.

Skinner’s team, currently topping the Barclays Women’s Super League table with two wins from two games, bounced back from their first leg setback with confidence and composure. This triumph underlines United’s growing stature in women’s football as they prepare for their maiden Champions League group stage campaign.
