UEFA Women’s Champions League

Hearts and Rangers were knocked out of the Women’s Champions League and will drop into the Europa Cup after conceding late goals against HB Køge and Ajax respectively.

Kayla Jardine’s strike had put Hearts ahead at half-time – her second goal in as many games. That lead held until the hour mark when Jereko equalised for Køge from a corner. Then, in the first minute of added time, Mille Gejl scored the winner for the Danish side, who hosted all the matches in Hearts’ second qualifying round mini-tournament.

The SWPL champions will now enter the Europa Cup first qualifying round.

Rangers also exited Champions League qualifying in dramatic fashion as Sherida Spitse’s penalty secured Ajax a place in the play-off round.

It looked as though Eilidh Austin’s equaliser two minutes from the end of normal time would force extra time at Petershill Park in Glasgow. However, Austin was then adjudged to have fouled Joelle Smits on the edge of the six yard area and Netherlands midfielder Spitse slotted home the winner in stoppage time.

Ajax had dominated possession, but neither side managed an effort on target until Mirte van Koppen’s header from a corner was cleared off the line by Katie Wilkinson after 53 minutes. The visitors broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark when goalkeeper Jemma Fife could only parry substitute striker Katja Snoeijs’ header towards her own goal line and defender Nadine Noordam forced the ball home.

Only then were group hosts Rangers stung into life. Laura Berry fired straight at goalkeeper Femke Liefting before seeing another drive deflected just wide. A Bailley Collins cross struck the face of the bar and Wilkinson had a shot deflected wide before Austin rose to head home a Nicola Docherty corner.

Docherty had scored a late equaliser and Austin the winner as Rangers beat of Slavia Prague 2-1 in Wednesday’s group stage semi final but there was to be no such reprieve this time, however, and Leanne Crichton’s side must now drop into the Europa Cup first qualifying round.
