Sports take valuable win

Bournemouth Sports 3 Bridgwater United 0

Bournemouth Sports had a day to remember in the wind and rain at their Chapel Gate home with a 3-0 win over Bridgwater United in their FAWNL Division One South West clash.

Both sides battled well in conditions which favoured short passes to feet and intelligent movement but it was the hosts who got the goals, aided by a degree of good fortune, to notch a vital three points, lifting them towards mid-table.

There were few chances in a tight opening period with efforts on goal mainly from distance. Connie Pengelly did fire a shot just wide from a tight angle for the visitors but it was Beatriz Kretteis who came closest to giving Bridgwater the lead. A speculative effort from outside the box on 38 minutes hit the bar with Sports keeper Jess Vallis beaten.

Good work by Emma Eden to close down and block a clearance turned into an inch perfect through ball for Liane Folkenstern who calmly finished past Charlotte Johnson in the first minute of first half additional time to give the hosts an interval lead.

Bridgwater sought a way back on the restart, Abbie Carslake drawing a fine save by Vallis on 56 minutes but a disastrous defensive mix up on 63 minutes doubled the home advantage though a headed own goal.

Substitute Aimee Kingdon nearly brought the visitors back into the match on 70 minutes but the outcome was settled with just over ten minutes left. Hannah Bennett found Elle Elkins who crossed for sub Emily Phillips to finish from close range and clinch the win.

It was a sweet victory for the home side to celebrate a first match at their newly refurbished home ground, having successfully led a somewhat nomadic existence in their first season and a half at National League level.
