Scotland cruise to six-goal victory

Scotland 6 (Cuthbert 17, Weir 20,57,pen 67, Davidson 81, Hanson 86)

Israel 0

Scotland produced a dominant performance in Budapest as they swept aside Israel 6-0 in their FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier, maintaining their good recent form under head coach Melissa Andreatta and boosting their chances of finishing on top of their group.

Andreatta made two changes from the Belgium match, with Claire Emslie returning to the starting line up following the birth of her son, while Kirsty Hanson also came back into the side.

Scotland took control from the first whistle and were quickly on the front foot. Kirsty Hanson struck the bar early on, while Kathleen McGovern and Caroline Weir both tested goalkeeper Fortuna Rubin. Israel offered little threat, with only a free kick into the penalty area causing any brief concern for the hosts.

The breakthrough arrived after 17 minutes when Erin Cuthbert opened the scoring with a powerful strike from 18 yards, rifling the ball high into the net. Weir doubled the advantage shortly afterwards, driving low into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Scotland continued to press, with Cuthbert seeing an effort saved by Rubin, Jenna Clark heading over and McGovern glancing a header just wide. The tempo remained high throughout the first half as Scotland took their two-goal lead into the interval.

The Scots emerged for the second half with the same intensity and Weir nearly added a third when she capitalised on a loose back pass, though her effort went wide. The third goal duly arrived just before the hour mark though as Cuthbert threaded a precise pass through for Weir, who finished neatly.

Weir went close to her hat-trick moments later, sliding in at the back post to meet a Hanson cross but sending her effort over the bar. Her third goal came from the penalty spot after Israel were penalised for a handball following a deflected Lauren Davidson shot. Weir calmly converted from the spot to complete her treble.

Davidson made it 5-0, again profiting from Cuthbert’s creativity, as she thundered a shot into the top corner. Hanson rounded off the scoring with the sixth goal, capping an impressive team display in which Scotland controlled proceedings from start to finish.

The only negative note for Andreatta was the late injury to vice-captain Erin Cuthbert, who was stretchered off in the 90th minute, causing visible concern among her team mates.

Scotland will face Israel at the same venue again on Tuesday in their final FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier.
