Scotland under-17 finish joint top of table

The spoils were shared with Finland at Broadwood Stadium as Scotland Under-17s finished round one of the UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship qualifying on joint top of the table.

Scotland had fire in their eyes as they readied themselves for another monumental game in the qualifying group stage. Both sides enjoyed spells of dominance and reaped the rewards of their persistence, as the first half delivered the only goals of the game.

Finland were on the front foot right from the off and came inches from breaking the deadlock as Kossila found herself in acres of space in the Scotland box. The striker could only watch as her shot ricocheted off the underside of the bar and bounced in front of the goal line, allowing Fellows to hoof the ball to safety.

Finland came back for another bite of the apple in the sixth minute as Kossila nearly profited from an attacking spell. This time, the striker could only fire into the side netting, but Gorska had the angle covered.

With 22 minutes on the clock, Kossila was once again a threat for Finland as a well-worked corner found her free on the edge of the 18-yard box. However, her daisy-cutter was tipped around the post by Gorska.

Scotland continued to grow into the game and, in resilient fashion, became the driving force, dominating possession and putting pressure on the Finnish flanks.

Scotland began to push for the opener and came inches from taking the lead as Hope picked up the ball just outside the Finnish box. With the goalkeeper off her line, the striker tried her luck with a lob, but her effort went inches over the bar.

The Finnish goalkeeper gifted Scotland the lead in the 26th minute as the youngster was superbly pressured by Hope, who managed to pinch the ball from her feet. With the goalkeeper nearly 30 yards from the goal line, the striker carried the ball forward and into the empty net to give Scotland their first goal of the afternoon. 1–0.

Finland continued to push for an equaliser and reaped their reward with one minute remaining in the first half. Palmu was played through into the Scotland box and slid her effort under the outstretched arm of Gorska to bring the score level. 1–1.

Finland were first to turn to the substitutes’ bench at half time, with Kossila and goalscorer Palmu replaced by Varis and Poikonen.

Finland were straight on the front foot as, just three minutes after the restart, Eskola’s curling effort drifted just wide of the top corner as the visitors searched for their second goal of the afternoon.

Tuohy opted to make a change in the 56th minute, freshening up the front line as Scotland continued to search for another goal, with Fearne Smith replacing Lily McLaughlin.

The second half was dominated by Finland as they turned up the heat in search of a winning goal, and they came close once again, with the crossbar sparing Scotland’s blushes. Poikonen’s effort in the 61st minute rattled back off the crossbar, and Pastinen was there to head the rebound towards goal, but Gorska tipped the ball spectacularly over the bar with a strong left hand.

The wave of attacks continued as, 10 minutes later, Finland were awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal. Eskola’s low, driven effort once again had to be saved by Gorska to prevent it from sneaking into the bottom corner.

One minute later, Finland enjoyed their final attack of the game as Poikkeus was afforded time to dart from the halfway line into the Scotland box. However, this time, her shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

As the weather conditions continued to worsen, Scotland pushed further up the pitch in a last-ditch effort to find a winner, and they very nearly profited from it. Campbell whipped in a wonderful cross in the 84th minute, which Hope met, but her header bounced agonisingly wide.

This was the final chance of the match for either side, meaning the points were shared in the final game of Euro Qualifiers Round One. The result guarantees Scotland a place in League A for Round Two qualifying — a massive achievement once again for the young team.
