Scottish Women’s Premier League

Glasgow City will go into the New Year with a lead of ten points at the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League following a hard fought 1-0 victory over second placed Hearts in their top of the table clash.

A second half header from Nicole Kozlova proved decisive for the visitors, ensuring Glasgow City maintained their position at the summit and kept Hearts from closing the gap at the top. Hearts started brightly, with striker Carly Johns winning the ball high up the pitch, racing into the box, and attempting to slot home – though her effort was comfortably saved by City's goalkeeper Lee Gibson. Midway through the first half, Jess Husband drove down the left flank, cut inside onto her right foot, and unleashed a shot that cleared the bar.

Glasgow City threatened in the 37th minute when Maatta burst into the area, but Hearts centre back Danique Ypema produced an excellent recovery tackle to concede a corner, which the home side duly cleared. Moments later, Kozlova pounced on a loose pass in the Hearts defence and advanced into the box, but goalkeeper Rachael Johnstone was quick off her line to gather the danger.

The breakthrough arrived on 58 minutes: Lisa Evans delivered a precise cross from the right, and Kozlova timed her run perfectly to power a header against the post and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Hearts pushed for an equaliser as the game entered its closing stages. With around ten minutes remaining, Georgia Timms collided with Gibson in the box, and the ball fell to Sade Adamolekun, whose strike from distance drifted wide. Soon after, Jess Husband again got forward on the left and whipped in a

dangerous cross that found Adamolekun, but her effort from a tricky angle flew behind for a goal kick.

In the dying moments, the ball was played over the top for substitute Lauren Wade, who cut inside onto her left foot and fired goalwards – only for a deflection to send it behind for a corner. From the resulting set piece, captain Georgia Hunter swung a boot at the ball amid a crowded penalty area, but it was cleared to safety.

Despite their late efforts, Hearts were unable to find a leveller, and City claimed all three points to strengthen their grip on top spot.

Rangers kept the pressure on the leading duo with a commanding 3-0 victory over Aberdeen at the Balmoral Stadium. Top scorer Katie Wilkinson opened the scoring with a close range finish and Scotland youth international Laura Berry doubled the lead before the interval, assisted by Kim Shin-Ji, who then added a third after the restart with a direct corner. Rangers sit third, just ahead of Celtic on goal difference, while Aberdeen remain second bottom.

Celtic further damaged champions Hibernian's title hopes by inflicting a 2-1 defeat, highlighted by Maria McAneny's strike after just four seconds – one of the fastest goals in history. McAneny produced a remarkable effort from the centre spot with the first kick of the game, which sailed over Hibs goalkeeper Noa Schumacher and into the back of the net, without any of the home side touching the ball. Scarlett Herron levelled matters just before half time with a fine swivelled effort from the edge of the area, but Saoirse Noonan's penalty rebound sealed the win for Elena Sadiku's side.

Hamilton Academical earned their first point of the season in a hard fought 1-1 draw with Montrose at New Douglas Park. Eighteen-year-old Lucy Barclay volleyed the hosts ahead from the edge of the box, but Montrose levelled before half time through Kaela McDonald-Nguah, with neither team able to make a breakthrough after the break.

Meanwhile, Partick Thistle secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Motherwell thanks to Jo Love's superb 92nd minute free kick, lifting them to seventh in the table. Kodie Hay had given Motherwell the lead, before Rachel Donaldson powered home a quickfire equaliser for the Jags. Although Motherwell hold a superior goal difference, Thistle's better head-to-head record sees them leapfrog their opponents in the table.
