Scottish Women’s Premier League
Rangers maintained their position at the summit of the SWPL table with a hard fought 3-0 victory over a resilient Aberdeen side at Pittodrie.
The match remained goalless at half time, with the Dons proving a stern test, as they have done against Celtic and Glasgow City this season. Katie Wilkinson broke the deadlock just past the hour mark, netting her customary goal. Aberdeen held firm until the 89th minute when teenager Holly Daniel inadvertently turned the ball into her own net. Mia McAulay sealed the win in the 93rd minute, ensuring Rangers’ perfect start continued, while Aberdeen were left to rue another narrow defeat.
Glasgow City extended their flawless SWPL record so far with a commanding 5-1 win over Hearts at Petershill, defying expectations of a closer contest. Leanne Ross’ side surged into a 3-0 lead by half time, with Natalia Wrobel, Abi Harrison, and Nicole Kozlova tearing through the Hearts defence. Kozlova struck again just before the hour, and Sofia Maatta added a fifth from close range. Jenna Slattery pulled one back for Hearts, beating Lee Gibson at her near post, but it was scant consolation as Glasgow City made it five wins from five.
Kathleen McGovern’s ninth goal of the season earned Champions Hibernian a vital point in a 1-1 draw against Celtic at
Meadowbank. Celtic took an early lead through Natalie Ross, and a defeat would have left Hibs seven points adrift of
leaders Rangers. However, McGovern capitalised on slack Celtic defending to steal the ball in the box and fire home the equaliser.
The result keeps Celtic in third and lifts Hibs to fourth, overtaking city rivals Hearts.
Partick Thistle salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw at Motherwell, thanks to Mya Bates’ late heroics. Carla Boyce, facing her former club, put Motherwell ahead with a first half penalty at K-Park. The hosts held the lead until Bates, introduced as a substitute in the final 10 minutes, made an immediate impact by firing home to secure a share of the spoils for Thistle.
Montrose compounded Hamilton Academical’s struggles with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Links Park. Accies, buoyed by a narrow 1-0 loss to Glasgow City last weekend, sought their first points of the season but were undone by second half strikes from Chloe Gover and Tally Robb. Former Aberdeen defender Gover scored a long range stunner, while Robb tapped in after Kaela McDonald-Nguah’s header struck the bar, handing Montrose their second win of the campaign.
SWPL 2
There is no change to the top two in the table after both recorded victories on Sunday. Kilmarnock remain in pole position and stretched their goal difference by running out 5-0 winners over East Fife. Cara Gray struck a first half hat-trick for Killie and they went on to add further goals after the break through Georgina McTear and an own goal. Spartans continue to keep pace with Kilmarnock, they defeated Queen’s Park 2-0 thanks to goals either side of half time from Ronaigh Douglas and Eilidh Davies. Boroughmuir Thistle are third following their 5-0 victory over St Johnstone, in which Ashley Elizabeth, Holly Aitchison, Ami Robertson, Lauren Hall and Emily Reid all got on the scoresheet. Dundee Utd meanwhile edged out Stirling University by the odd goal in seven to remain three points off the pace. Louise Mason, Lyla Marnie, Dannielle Findlay and Callie Bowman were all on target for United, with Tanaka Chitengu (2) and Hannah Kenyon replying. A second half double from Sophie Timlin earned Gartcairn Women a 2-1 success away to Livingston, who had taken a first half lead through Justine Strain.
