Scottish Women’s Premier League

Rangers surged to the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League with a commanding 2-0 victory over rivals Celtic at New Douglas Park in the first Old Firm derby of the season.

Mia McAulay broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, rifling a shot into the top left corner from Katie Wilkinson’s precise cut back. Eilidh Austin then sealed the win with 11 minutes remaining, heading in unmarked at the far post from McAulay’s pinpoint cross.

Despite an early attempt from Wilkinson, whose long range effort sailed over, and a blocked shot from Celtic’s Morgan Cross, clear cut chances were scarce. Celtic’s Maria McAneny overhit a pass to Cross, while Rangers’ Brogan Hay and Lizzie Arnot failed to find the target. Goalkeeper Jenna Fife’s crucial block on Cross kept the scores level until McAulay’s opener.

Hearts handed reigning champions Hibernian their first league defeat of the season in a thrilling Edinburgh derby at

Tynecastle. Georgia Timms converted a 69th minute penalty after Carly Johns was fouled by Hibs goalkeeper Noa

Schumacher and Jessica Husband sealed the 2-0 win with a fierce strike eight minutes from time, assisted by substitute Slattery. Hibs had their chances, with Kathleen McGovern testing Hearts keeper Rachael Johnstone and striking the side netting, while Eilidh Adams headed over. Schumacher denied Johns at close range, and Johnstone thwarted Rosie Livingstone and McGovern whilst Olufolasade Adamolekun’s curling shot was also repelled. Hibs nearly grabbed a late consolation, but McGovern’s stoppage time free kick drifted just over.

Glasgow City preserved their perfect SWPL record with a dominant win over Montrose. Emily Whelan teed up Abi Harrison for the opener, and Lana Golob doubled the lead before half time from Lisa Evans’ assist. Evans provided another key pass for Erin McLaughlin’s second half strike, before Mebae Tanaka and Lisa Forrest, via a 90th minute penalty, completed the victory.

Aberdeen salvaged a dramatic point against Partick Thistle with an injury time equaliser. Lia Tweedie’s 73rd minute goal seemed to have secured victory for Thistle, but Toni Leigh Finnegan set up Bridget Galloway to level in the fourth minute of added time. Both teams now sit on four points from four games.

Motherwell meanwhile clinched their first SWPL victory of the season, dismantling Hamilton Academical with three second half goals for a 4-1 win. Chloe Muir’s early strike for the Accies was swiftly cancelled out by Sophie

Black’s reply. Katie Rice, Bailley Collins, and Hannah Cairns then struck after the break to secure the points.

There were no matches played in SWPL 2 due to teams being involved in the First Round of the Sky Sports Cup, with Kilmarnock emerging as winners from a long penalty shootout against Dundee Utd after the two sides had fought out a 1-1 draw. Katie Frew had given United an early lead, with Kaitlyn Canavan equalising after the break and after extra time could not produce a winner, it was Killie who went through to the last sixteen as they triumphed 8-7 from the spot. Extra time was needed at the Meadowbank Stadium with Gartcairn Women winning 1-0 against Boroughmuir Thistle, courtesy of a solitary strike with seven minutes remaining through Georgie Robb. Livingston enjoyed a much smoother passage, defeating East Fife 4-0 thanks to a goal apiece from Vivienne Strain, Megan Whiteford, Jessica Murphy and Justine Strain, whilst St Johnstone ran out 5-2 winners at Stirling University, Jodie Malcolm bagging a brace along with Elvie McLean, Rachel Howie and a Steffi Simson penalty, with Maura Paterson and Olivia McHarg replying.

The Second Round draw for the Sky Sports Cup is as follows (to be played on 5 October):
