Scottish Women’s Premier League

Rangers retained their position at the summit of the Scottish Women's Premier League on goal difference after a convincing 3-0 victory away to Motherwell, maintaining their perfect start to the campaign.    

Manager Leanne Crichton rang the changes with six alterations to her starting line-up, and it was one of the recalled players who proved instrumental in breaking the deadlock. Brogan Hay's shot on the stroke of half time took a decisive deflection off Motherwell's Ellie MacDonald and looped over trialist goalkeeper Jen Currie. Rangers doubled their advantage early in the second period when Hannah Blake produced a delicate chip to beat Currie once more. Last season's top scorer Katy Wilkinson entered the fray just after the hour mark and put the seal on the win with an injury time penalty, ensuring Rangers remain unbeaten and top of the table.  

Celtic made it four wins from four, but they were made to work hard for their 3-2 success by a determined Partick Thistle side in a thoroughly entertaining contest at Petershill Park.

The visitors took a sensational lead inside five minutes when Issy Fisher unleashed a stunning first time volley from distance that dipped over Ava Easdon. Thistle responded admirably, hitting the woodwork before Imogen Longcake marked her 100th appearance for the club with a powerful equaliser on 24 minutes, racing onto a long ball forward before burying her shot inside the far post. The first half also featured a controversial moment involving Celtic defender Fionnuala Morgan, who escaped a second yellow card after appearing to shove Sophie Townsley following an earlier high tackle.

Celtic regained the lead early in the second half when Hannah Jordan capitalised on an underhit back pass from Thistle's Morgan Hay, but the visitors hit back once more as Townsley's effort proved too strong for Ade Gay to keep out. With time running out, Lisa Robertson rose highest to head home from a corner and secure a dramatic 3-2 victory for the Hoops.

Hearts bounced back from last weekend's defeat to Rangers in emphatic fashion, dismantling Montrose 7-0 on their own turf to get their title challenge back on track.

Carly Johns opened the scoring early on, reacting quickest to a rebound, before Erin Rennie doubled the lead from distance just before the interval. Kayla Jardine added a third after the restart, and Montrose's woes deepened when Louisa Brown turned the ball into her own net. Mariana Speckmaier then struck twice in quick succession, with Ava Crawford adding a seventh in stoppage time to complete the rout. The result leaves Montrose still searching for their first points of the season whilst Hearts lie three points the leaders in third.

In Friday night's action, Kelly Brady scored twice as Glasgow City twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with Hibernian at Meadowbank.

Libby Smith fired Hibs ahead with a long range strike inside five minutes, but Brady levelled soon after, finishing off a clever pass from Lisa Evans. The hosts were forced into a goalkeeping change when Rowena Armitage replaced the injured Ariana Anastasiadis, and Jess Fitzgerald restored Hibs' lead before half time, forcing the ball home after a double save from Lee Gibson. Brady struck again on the hour, picking her spot from six yards to earn City a share of the spoils. Both sides move on to seven points from four matches, trailing the leading pair of Rangers and Celtic.

Izzy Young netted a hat-trick as Spartans claimed their first victory since returning to the SWPL, overcoming Aberdeen 3-1 at Ainslie Park. The visitors took an early lead through Soraya Walsh, who notched Aberdeen's first goal of the league campaign, but Young levelled before half time. She struck again early in the second period to put Spartans ahead, then completed her treble on the hour mark to seal a significant win. Aberdeen remain without a win and continue to search for their first points of the new season.

Boroughmuir Thistle made it four wins out of four at the top of the table when they won 3-1 away to Livingston. Holly Aitchison got Thistle off to a great start when she gave them the lead from the penalty spot on nine minutes, with Livi getting themselves back on level terms ahead of half time. Aitchison put Boroughmuir back in front midway through the second half and Carys Grieve wrapped up the points ten minutes later. Kilmarnock move up into second place on goal difference after scoring seven times without reply past St Johnstone. Skye Stout gave Killie a first half lead which was doubled on the half hour by a Cara Gray penalty, with Laura McLaughlin making it three early in the second half. Kelsy Crainie and Erin O’Brien both got on the scoresheet before Gray completed her double and Rachel Osborne rounded off the scoring late on. Queen’s Park also remain three points off the pace following their 2-0 victory over Gartcairn Women, which came from a brace of second half goals by Summer Thomson. Falkirk maintained their record as the division’s other unbeaten team when they won 1-0 away to Hamilton Academical, Maisy Stewart netting the only goal of the game with six minutes remaining. Dundee United lifted themselves into the top half of the table when they defeated Renfrew Ladies 3-0 at Foundation Park. United got off to a flying start when Alma Codegoni and Lily Park put them two goals ahead inside the opening ten minutes, and they went on to seal the points when Steffi Simson added the third midway through the second half.
