Scottish Women’s Premier League

Spartans are continuing to close the gap on SWPL 2 leaders Kilmarnock and they are now only two points behind following Sunday’s matches.

Kilmarnock made the trip to Dundee United and were left frustrated after battling out a 2-2 draw. Things appeared to be going well for Killie as they took the lead on the half hour through Cara Gray, but United hit back quickly with an equaliser from Milly MacKInlay, and Danni Findlay then put them in front from the penalty spot, seven minutes into the second half. Kilmarnock rallied and Skye Stout levelled the scores once again on the hour, but they couldn’t find a winner against their fifth placed opponents.

Spartans made sure of increasing the pressure on Kilmarnock with a 2-0 win away to Boroughmuir Thistle, notching up their eleventh win in a row in the process. Emily Cadell opened the scoring in first half injury time and an own goal wrapped up three more points for Spartans, seven minutes from time.

The other match in the top half of the split went the way of Queen’s Park, who defeated Gartcairn Women to narrow the gap on third placed Boroughmuir Thistle to three points. Cairn went in front through Clare Docherty after fourteen minutes, a lead which they took into half time, but Sophie Rutherford brought the Spiders back on level terms early in the second half and Ellie Kane completed the turnaround for her side, thanks to an injury time winner.

One match was played in the bottom four of the split and it resulted in a 3-0 victory for Stirling University away to St Johnstone. Maura Paterson gave Stirling an early lead which was doubled on the stroke of half time by Hannah Kenyon, and after the break, Kendra Walls put the seal on what was only a second league win of the season for her side.
