Pauline steps down from Scotland role

Former Scotland international and under-17s Head Coach, Pauline MacDonald, is set to depart the Scottish FA after nearly 20 years of dedicated service to the girls’ and women’s game.

Before embarking on her coaching career, Pauline played for the Scotland Women’s National Team and amassed over 60 international caps during her varied playing career.

Pauline started out with Central Fife before spells with Cumbernauld United, Cove Rangers and Stenhousemuir. In 1998, Pauline departed for America when she joined Atlanta Classics in the USL W-League and was named in the league All-Star team that season.

Another year in the USA followed with the Miami Gliders, before Pauline moved to Arsenal. While there she won two Premier League medals, the FA Cup and two Premier League Cups. Pauline left Arsenal in 2003 and retired from playing football.

In 2006 she came out of retirement for one season with Edinburgh City before a brief foray into management. In 2007 she took over at Dalkeith Ladies. Pauline guided them to promotion in her first season.

After 10 years in various coaching and development roles within the Scottish FA, Pauline was appointed as head coach of the Scotland Women's Under-17 squad in October 2017.

As well as the influence on our young talent over the years, Pauline has also guided the under-17s to back-to-back ‘League A’ status in UEFA qualifiers over the past two years.

Pauline will leave her role at the end of June to pursue new opportunities.

Scottish FA’s Chief Football Officer, Andy Gould: “Pauline has been a fantastic asset to the girls’ and women’s game who’s brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to her role.

“The impact she’s had on the players coming through the youth age groups has been undeniable and the dedication and passion she’s shown throughout her time with the Scottish FA has been first class.

“We wish Pauline all the best for the future.”

Scotland Women’s under-17s head coach, Pauline MacDonald: “It’s been a privilege to represent Scotland at every level in my career and taking the decision to leave now hasn’t been an easy one.

“I’ve had so many fantastic experiences, personally and professionally, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Scottish FA for that.

“Being part of the women’s game and watching it evolve in Scotland has been incredible and I know I’m leaving the game in a better place, where it will continue to go from strength to strength.

“This is the right time for me to explore new opportunities, so for now, I will return to the stands to support the girls.”
