Morgan the Mighty stuns Rangers

Celtic 1 (Cross 26) Rangers 0

Celtic claimed the Women's Scottish Cup for only the third time in their history, edging out Rangers 1-0 in a tense final at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Morgan Cross struck the decisive goal in the 26th minute, securing a hard fought win for the Hoops despite playing the majority of the second half with ten players.

The final opened with a pre-kick-off firework display, but there were few fireworks on the pitch as the early football proved cagey. The first notable chance arrived in the 11th minute when Rangers broke quickly down the right. Laura Berry squared for Mia McAulay, whose shot from inside the area struck the outside of the post.

Rangers had kept a clean sheet in this season’s Scottish Gas Scottish Cup campaign, until the 26th minute. Saoirse Noonan won the ball back brilliantly and delivered a precise cross that Morgan Cross finished low past Jenna Fife for her fifth goal of the cup competition.

Celtic nearly doubled their lead shortly afterwards when Chloe Craig headed over from a corner, while Katie Wilkinson drew a routine save from Adelaide Gay at the other end. Rangers responded with efforts from Eilidh Austin and May Cruft that failed to test Gay, though the Celtic goalkeeper was called into action to save a more central strike from Wilkinson.

A dangerous cross-shot from Calliste Brookshire sailed just wide in stoppage time as the sides went in at the break with Celtic leading by the Cross strike.

Rangers began the second period on the front foot. Katie Wilkinson fired in a powerful effort within the first minute, but Gay gathered comfortably. Emma Lawton was booked for a foul on Brookshire, and from the resulting free-kick McAulay headed towards goal, only for Gay to claim the ball well.

Celtic Head Coach Grant Scott introduced Jennifer Smith for goalscorer Cross in the 55th minute, and the substitute immediately tested Fife with a well struck shot. However, the game seemed to have turned in Rangers’ favour moments later when Lawton received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Brookshire, leaving Celtic with ten players from the 58th minute.

Leanne Crichton introduced Brogan Hay for Eilidh Austin as Rangers pushed hard for an equaliser. Celtic responded with a triple substitution on 73 minutes, bringing on Shannon McGregor, Tara O’Hanlon and Momo Nakao for Rabjohn, Luke and Noonan. Camille Lafaix also replaced May Cruft for the Light Blues.

Tempers flared in the 81st minute as Laura Berry and Claire Walsh were both cautioned following an altercation. Poppy Pritchard replaced Amy Gallacher in Celtic’s final change.

Despite their numerical advantage, Rangers could not find a way through. Adelaide Gay produced several important saves and clearances as Celtic defended resolutely with Kelly Clark and Chloe Craig having outstanding matches in the centre of defence. Six minutes of added time were signalled, but the Hoops held firm to secure a memorable cup triumph.
