Moneys’ dream journey alive and kicking!

Moneyfields 1 Millwall Lionesses 0

Moneyfields joined the elite professional clubs in the last 32 of the Adobe Women's FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Millwall Lionesses at the University of Portsmouth's Furze Lane facility.

The present Millwall club play in the London & South East Regional League and presented a strong and well organised challenge to their higher ranked opponents. With the experienced and powerful Emma Whitter up front and Chloe Burr delivering quality passes and set pieces, Lionesses were able to keep Moneys' defence on their toes early on.

However, the majority of the clear cut chances were at the other end, chiefly provided  by the excellent wing play of Beth Burgess. A run and pinpoint cross on 4 minutes was headed back across goal and just wide by Rozalia Sitarz.

Chrissie Wiggins in the Millwall goal was decisive and confident in her handling and distribution but was grateful for the woodwork from Gemma Simmonds' shot on 25 minutes and saw a Sitarz shot from a tight angle pass just wide.

Burgess was the architect of the crucial goal on 35 minutes, returning her initial blocked corner for Kau'inohea Taylor to pounce on the loose ball to shoot past the advancing Wiggins.

The earlier storm had cleared but the gusty wind remained throughout and was blowing in favour of the Lionesses on the restart. The visitors controlled the play for the opening stages of the second half and nearly equalised with a curling effort from the edge of the area.

Moneys kept their concentration high and played their way back into control of the contest which became very stop-start with fouls and injuries. As the match reached the final stages, Moneys created several decent chances to secure their win but Wiggins was alert to deny Simmonds whilst other efforts flew just over or wide.

Moneys managed the final minutes brilliantly to claim their historic victory with manager Karl Watson having brought the club from the Hampshire County League to national recognition in the seven seasons of their existence.

Moneyfields were rewarded in Tuesday's draw with a trip to Championship London City Lionesses, ironically the club which took over the licence of a previous incarnation of the Millwall Lionesses.
