Millie Bright to hang up her boots

Chelsea captain Millie Bright has called time on her playing career at the age of 32, ending a distinguished 12-year association with the club during which she established herself as one of the finest defenders in the women’s game.

The centre back departs as Chelsea’s longest-serving player, with 314 appearances and 20 major trophies to her name. She was integral to the club’s first major honour in 2015 and featured prominently in every one of the 19 trophies that followed.

Bright will remain at Chelsea as a trustee of the Chelsea Foundation, continuing her significant off-field work in community and charitable initiatives that she began while still playing.

In her retirement statement, Bright said: “Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football. I’ve given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge.

“It is now time, and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way.”

Signed from Doncaster Belles ahead of the 2015 season, Bright went on to play more Women’s Super League matches than any other player in history. She broke Jordan Nobbs’ record of 210 appearances in November 2025 and currently sits top of the list with 216 WSL outings. She holds Chelsea’s all-time appearance record with 314 matches and scored 19 goals during her time at the club.

A serial winner, she helped Chelsea secure all eight of their WSL titles since 2015, along with six FA Cups and four League Cups, including domestic Trebles in 2021 and 2025. In the unbeaten 2024-25 domestic campaign, she featured in 36 matches, logging 3,173 minutes while wearing the captain’s armband, having been appointed club captain in September 2023. She also appeared for Chelsea in the 2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, when they were beaten 4-0 by Barcelona in Gothenburg.

Internationally, Bright earned 88 caps for England after debuting in September 2016, scoring six goals. She played a key role in the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory on home soil and captained the side to the 2023 World Cup final. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to the sport, she was awarded an OBE in the King’s New Year Honours in 2024.

Chelsea have paid warm tribute to their captain, describing her as a “true legend” and expressing pride in her immense contribution to both the club and the growth of women’s football.

The club will honour her remarkable service ahead of their final Barclays WSL match of the season against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on 16 May.
