International Women’s Day celebrated in style
Winchester City Flyers 3 Oxford City 0
Winchester City Flyers and Oxford City put on a fine showcase for the Southern Region League on International Women's Day.
Starting proceedings with a joint photo where players were mixed in together, the teams had a well contested and entertaining match where the home team ran out 3-
Winchester got off to the best possible start when keeper Ellie Parker delivered a perfect long clearance to release Kayleigh Tonks on the right wing. There was still plenty for the midfielder to do in order to score but Tonks held off a determined challenge before sliding the ball past keeper Kiera Maskell on five minutes.
Oxford City had plenty of the ball during the rest of the first half and had the home defence worried on occasions. Twice, good chances for an equaliser were created by winning the ball high up the pitch but on both occasions the close range efforts went wide of Parker's goal.
Just as in the first half, the hosts scored early after the restart. This time Chelsie Hay created the goal with a hard low shot running in from the left. Maskell got down well to push the effort away but Laura Da Silva was on hand to convert.
The highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly the third Flyers goal. Charlie Snelling, who had seemed to be everywhere throughout, got on the ball 40 yards out and simply lashed a rocket shot high into the top left corner for a memorable conclusion to the scoring on 58 minutes.
The fact that there was no further scoring was down to the good work of both defences and keepers. Oxford City kept attacking with good intent right to the final whistle and Parker had to be at her best on three occasions to preserve a Flyers clean sheet, with a 90th minute dive at the feet of Emily Harris the pick of her saves.
Flyers moved back into second place in the Premier Division with this win, albeit some way behind leaders Wycombe Wanderers. The Hoops meanwhile remain in eighth place with seven games left to play.
