Hughes grabs late equaliser for Wales
Czech Republic 2 (Bartonova 16, Zufankova 54) Wales 2 (Cain 30, Hughes 90)
Elise Hughes came to Wales' rescue deep into stoppage time, heading home a dramatic equaliser to secure a valuable point in a 2-
The striker's 93rd minute header from a superb delivery by Gemma Evans earned Rhian Wilkinson's side a hard fought share of the spoils in Uherske Hradiste, in what could prove a crucial result in a competitive group.
Head coach Rhian Wilkinson fielded a strong line up for Wales' first competitive outing since EURO 2025. The three centurions – Sophie Ingle, Hayley Ladd and captain Angharad James – all started, with Olivia Clark preferred in goal.
Wales began brightly, with Ceri Holland and Ffion Morgan posing early threats down the flanks. However, defensive vulnerabilities from set pieces surfaced once more, as Eva Bartonová headed the Czech Republic ahead from a corner in the 16th minute, giving the hosts a boost.
Tereza Krejciríková, Michaela Khýrová and Jana Zufánková troubled the Welsh backline throughout, but Wales responded impressively. On the half hour mark, Lily Woodham provided an excellent ball into the box, and Hannah Cain finished clinically to level the scores with a well worked team goal.
Cain nearly added a second before the interval, only to be denied by a fine save from Olivie Lukášová, while captain James saw a long range effort fly narrowly over. The half ended with the Czech Republic applying pressure through a series of corners, but Wales held firm.
The second period saw Khýrová remain a persistent danger to the Welsh defence. Wilkinson introduced Carrie Jones for Morgan early on, but Wales suffered a setback in the 54th minute. Following a foul by Jones on the edge of the area, Bartonová gathered a loose ball, created space with quick feet and delivered a precise cross to the back post, where an unmarked Zufánková headed home past Clark.
The Czech Republic grew in confidence, enjoying extended possession and controlling proceedings. Wales freshened their attack with Mared Griffiths and Elise Hughes, while Jones forced a strong save from Lukášová on 76 minutes.
As Wales pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they became susceptible to counters. Clark produced a key stop to deny Polášková in a promising Czech opportunity, but drama awaited in added time.
Substitute Hughes rose highest to meet Gemma Evans' excellent ball and powered a header past Lukášová in the 93rd minute, sparking jubilant scenes among the Welsh players and staff. With both sides tipped to vie for top spot in the group, this late intervention could prove pivotal in the qualification campaign.
