Glasgow City beaten in extra time

Sporting Lisbon 3 Glasgow City 1

(aet; Sporting Lisbon won 4-2 on aggregate)

Sporting Lisbon produced a stunning comeback to knock Glasgow City out of the UEFA Women's Europa Cup, scoring twice in extra time to seal a dramatic 3-1 victory on the night and progress to the quarter finals on aggregate.

After Nicole Kozlova’s first half header had put the visitors 2-1 ahead on aggregate, Telma Encarnação’s equaliser forced an additional 30 minutes. The Portuguese striker then headed what proved to be the winner before Carla Armengol wrapped up a breathless encounter that sends Sporting through to face either Hammarby in the last eight.

The hosts began at a ferocious tempo, pinning Glasgow City back and forcing goalkeeper Lee Gibson into a string of early saves. Yet it was the SWPL leaders who struck first against the run of play four minutes before half time. Lisa Evans swung in a deep free kick, Kimberley Smit headed it back across goal, and Kozlova ghosted unmarked to power a header past goalkeeper Hannah Gibbs from six yards.

The Ukrainian forward nearly doubled the lead moments later, only to be denied by a fine stop.

City carried that momentum into the second half, with Linda Motlhalo twice going close, but Sporting gradually wrested control back. On 68 minutes a simple ball over the top caught the Scottish defence flat footed; Encarnação spun sharply and volleyed past Gibson for her second goal of the tie.

The same player rattled the post with a vicious free kick three minutes from time, the rebound flashing inches wide, while veteran Claudia Neto also threatened as City clung on for extra time.

The Scottish side’s resistance finally cracked six minutes into the extra period. Ashley Barron’s header looped just over, but from the resulting set piece Encarnação stole between the centre halves to nod Sporting in front.

With City pushing forward desperately, gaps appeared at the back. Armengol exploited one in the 101st minute, clipping a delightful finish over the advancing Gibson to spark wild celebrations among the home crowd.

Glasgow City’s remarkable European adventure therefore ended in heartbreak, while Sporting march on to the last eight for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
