Genero Adran Leagues

Cardiff City Women dramatically closed the gap at the top of the Genero Adran Premier to just two points with a thrilling 2-1 victory over leaders Wrexham at the Cardiff International Sports Campus (CIS Stadium).

The Bluebirds dominated the early exchanges and took the lead after 17 minutes when Mikayla Cook delivered a dangerous low cross from the right, which Wrexham defender Erin Lovett inadvertently turned into her own net.

Wrexham responded strongly and restored parity on the hour mark through their in-form youngster Faye Knox. The forward timed her run impeccably to meet Hannah Snape’s free kick into the box, heading home from close range for her seventh goal in just 11 appearances this season for the Red Dragons.

The reverse fixture in October had ended in a 1-1 draw, and it appeared history would repeat itself until Cardiff snatched a priceless winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Substitute Fiona Barry latched onto Nieve Jenkins’ long ball forward, held off the challenge of Knox, and coolly slotted into the far corner to seal the three points.

The result leaves Cardiff firmly in the title race, trailing Wrexham by two points but with games in hand providing further encouragement in what promises to be a fiercely contested campaign.

In the day's other fixture, Barry Town United climbed up to sixth in the standings, courtesy of a convincing 4-1 win over bottom-of-the-table Pontypridd United at Jenner Park.

The Linnets asserted control from the outset and broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Beca Thomas capitalised on a loose ball to fire home her third league goal of the season. Despite losing forward India Shanahan to injury, Barry maintained their momentum, with Erin Murray doubling the advantage on 33 minutes.

Lucy Attwood extended the lead early in the second half with a clinical finish, making it 3-0. Pontypridd responded immediately as Madison Lloyd netted for the fourth league game in succession to reduce the arrears.

However, Barry quickly restored their three-goal cushion four minutes later through Ellie Gunney, who scored her first goal since November 2024 to round off a dominant display and secure a much-needed victory. Pontypridd's defeat marked their 12th successive league loss of the season, underscoring the challenges they face at the foot of the table.
