Farnham’s opening day statement win

Farnham Town 7 Reading 3

Newly promoted to the Southern Region League Premier Division, Farnham Town scored seven times in their first match of the new season, defeating Reading in a ten-goal thriller at the Memorial Ground.

Ashlee Hincks scored four times, two in each half and Cherelle Khassal added two in a dominant second half display.

Reading played a full part in an entertaining encounter but were undone by the finishing power of the hosts, whose squad contains players with great experience at the highest levels of the game.

It took just three minutes for Hincks to open the scoring with a beautifully struck right foot effort from 20 yards. When the same player added a long range free kick on 13 minutes the visitors were up against it. Reading responded well, getting good positions from winning the ball high up the pitch, Tia Johnson going close to pulling a goal back on 25 minutes.

Reading did halve the deficit right on the break when Alice Curr's corner was headed home by Bethan Poole. However Farnham always had the edge in finishing and attacking invention. Khassal twice showed her pace and control to beat Sophie Butler and double Farnham's tally. In between, Johnson had kept Reading in touch with a neat finish past the advancing Rose Kite on 62 minutes.

Hincks completed her hat-trick by winning and converting a spot kick, then she set up Alisha Buckingham for the sixth. Keeper Kite assisted the final home goal, her precise clearance releasing Hincks to lob Butler as the match entered additional time.

The visitors closed out the scoring with a fine Curr free kick from 20 yards to round off a lively encounter in front of over 200 spectators who had been well entertained on the day.
