FAW interest in Champions League Final

The Football Association of Wales has confirmed its intention to bring the 2029 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final to Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, an event that will help deliver a lasting legacy for women’s and girls’ football in Wales.

Following the submission of a declaration of interest to UEFA, the FAW will now work alongside the Principality Stadium, Welsh Government, Cardiff Council and other local partners to prepare a full proposal. The ambition is not only to stage one of European football’s most prestigious events but also to ensure it supports the continued growth of the women’s game at every level.

The bid comes at a significant moment for football in Wales. The Cymru Women’s National Team made history by competing at their first major international tournament at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, reflecting the rapid progress of the game in recent years. Looking ahead, the FAW has expressed an interest to jointly host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup alongside England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Wales is already set to host the UEFA U19 Championship in 2026 and will co-host UEFA EURO 2028, with the Principality Stadium selected as one of the venues.

Cardiff has already demonstrated its ability to host major international fixtures. In 2017, the city staged both the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final at Cardiff City Stadium and the UEFA Champions League Final at the Principality Stadium. The national stadium has also welcomed Rugby World Cups, European Rugby Champions Cup finals, and regular international rugby and football matches, underlining its status as a world-class venue.

For the FAW, securing the 2029 Women’s Champions League Final would represent an opportunity to inspire greater participation in the sport, strengthen the grassroots network, and enhance pathways for young players. The bid is designed to ensure that the impact of the event extends far beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch, creating a legacy that supports the continued development of women’s football in Wales and be a catalyst towards increased attendances at Women’s sporting events in the country.

UEFA has confirmed it has received multiple expressions of interest to host the 2029 final:

• France: Lyon-Décines, Parc Olympique Lyonnais

• Republic of Ireland: Dublin, Dublin Arena

• Switzerland: Basel, St. Jakob-Park

• Wales: Cardiff, National Stadium of Wales

Associations must submit their full bids by 10 June 2026, with the UEFA Executive Committee due to confirm the selected host in September 2026.
