City win but Hibs face daunting task

In a night of mixed fortunes for the two Scottish sides in the newly formed UEFA Women’s Europa Cup first qualifying round, SWPL champions Hibernian face a daunting task to overturn a three-goal deficit after a 4-1 defeat to Inter Milan in Italy, while Glasgow City secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Athlone Town.

Hibernian’s hopes were kept alive by a stunning strike from Eilidh Adams, who rifled home from just inside the box after Caley Gibb’s low cross to make it 3-1. However, Inter Milan dominated proceedings and Haley Bugeja opened the scoring early, firing across goal from the left channel, before Olivia Schough doubled the lead with a fine effort from a tight angle. Early in the second half, Elisa Polli capitalised on a defensive lapse to score from close range, and Benedetta Glionna sealed Inter’s victory with a powerful shot after a deft move.

Hibs now face a tough challenge in the second leg at Easter Road next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Glasgow City took firm control of their tie against Athlone Town, thanks to a superb performance from Sofia Maatta, who provided assists for all three goals in a 3-0 win at Petershill Park. The Finnish winger’s low cross allowed Amy Anderson to tap in the opener, before Maatta set up Linda Motlhalo, who confidently beat goalkeeper Megan Plaschko in the second half. Maatta’s forceful run to the goal line then created the third, with Lisa Forrest finishing clinically.

Glasgow City head to the second leg at Athlone Town Stadium next Wednesday in a strong position to advance.

Both Scottish sides will look to their home and away supporters to inspire them in their respective second legs as they aim to progress in the Europa Cup.
