City through but Hibs are eliminated

Glasgow City secured their place in the Second Qualifying Round of the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Athlone Town, completing a 6-0 aggregate triumph.

However, Hibernian’s Europa Cup journey came to an end following a 1-0 defeat at Easter Road against Inter Milan, capping a 5-1 aggregate loss.

Following an identical scoreline in the first leg at home, City were in control from the outset in Ireland. The scoring was opened on 33 minutes by Emily Whelan, who marked her return to her homeland with a well taken far post header. City nearly doubled their lead on the hour when defender Kimberley Smit headed just wide from a Lisa Evans corner.

Linda Motlhalo and Erin McLaughlin both saw efforts saved, but it was substitute Nicole Kozlova who stole the show. After seeing her penalty kick brilliantly stopped, Kozlova redeemed herself moments later, heading home after quick interplay. She sealed the victory with a simple tap in shortly after, ensuring a comfortable night for the Scottish side.

After a 4-1 defeat in Italy, SWPL champions Hibernian faced a daunting task but put in a spirited performance despite the odds.

Hibs held their own for much of the match, with a goalless draw looking likely as Inter dominated possession without creating clear chances. Scotland strikers Kathleen McGovern and Eilidh Adams—who netted a stunning goal in the first leg—came close, while defender Siobhan Hunter unleashed an audacious long-range effort from a free kick in her own half.

However, the game turned with ten minutes remaining when goalkeeper Noa Schumacher was sent off for denying Benedetta Glionna a goalscoring opportunity outside her box. 17-year-old Rowena Armitage, making only her second appearance for Hibs, nearly preserved a clean sheet, but substitute Masa Tomasevic struck in stoppage time to secure Inter’s passage to the second qualifying round of the inaugural second tier competition.
