Cherries on top again

AFC Bournemouth 3 Southampton U21 1

AFC Bournemouth retained the Adopt South Hampshire FA Senior Women's Cup with a 3-1 win over Southampton FC Under-21s in front of a crowd of 731 at Aldershot FC's EBB Stadium.

An absorbing tie was in the balance right until the seventh minute of additional time when substitute Erin Bioomfield headed in the Cherries' third.

Bournemouth started well against the young Saints and keeper Mia King had already made fine saves from Gemma McGuinness and Molly Barron-Clark before Kenni Thompson earned and converted a 20th minute spot kick.

Saints came more into the tie around the half hour and Kaylee Buckingham headed home Lucy Beard's deep corner on 36 minutes. However, another corner restored Cherries' lead just before the break. Thompson’s delivery was forced home in a close range scramble by Lucy Cooper.

Keeper King was soon busy again on the restart with a couple of smart saves as Bournemouth continued to have the edge but Saints rang the changes around the hour mark to good effect. The closest they came to a leveller was a Lucy Jeffrey shot against the bar with Sky Beardwell lofting over from the rebound.

The talented young Saints gave their all despite the occasional bout of risky overplaying at the back which led to further chances for the holders. McGuinness hit a post from one such turnover but it was a Barron-Clark free kick which set up Bloomfield's delicate flick over the advancing keeper to settle the outcome.

Given the gulf in experience between the sides it is to Saints' credit that they matched a strong AFCB team who have had a superb FAWNL season and played a most attractive brand of passing football, added to strong defensive organisation to retain the Cup.
