Carmarthen upset Pontypridd

Second tier Carmarthen Town caused the upset of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup second round as they triumphed 2-1 over top-flight Pontypridd United at the LHP Stadium.

Ponty may have been hoping for some respite from a difficult campaign in the Genero Adran Premier, but Carmarthen were in no mood to roll over and the Old Gold were two goals up at half-time thanks to Summer Evans’ penalty and a strike from Ophelia Jenkins.

Evie Brown scored her first senior goal for Pontypridd in the 72nd minute to half the deficit, but Carmarthen held on to secure their place in the quarter finals.

Swansea City were the biggest winners on Sunday afternoon as they earned a 10-0 home win over third tier Llanystumdwy. This was the David versus Goliath clash of the round, but Swansea were only 2-0 up at half time thanks to goals from Sammy Wynne and Emily Richards.

However, the floodgates opened in the second half at Llandarcy as Richards bagged her second of the afternoon before Taite Trivett, Stacey John, Maisie Miller and Ellie Lake all found the net in a clinical eight-minute spell. Chloe Chivers netted the eighth goal of the afternoon, John completed her brace soon after and Caitlin Williams made it double figures in stoppage time.

Last season’s runners-up Wrexham secured their quarter final spot courtesy of a 4-0 home win over Penybont. Despite plenty of early pressure, the Red Dragons did not break the deadlock until first half stoppage time when Hannah Snape fired past Bont debutant goalkeeper Georgia Tarullo.

Rosie Hughes doubled the advantage just before the hour mark and was then replaced by Katie Barker, who duly added her own name to the scoresheet just six minutes after coming on the pitch. Barker turned provider for Nat Clark to seal victory in the closing stages.

Briton Ferry Llansawel eased into the quarter finals with a 5-0 victory over Pure Swansea at the Renewable Centre Stadium. Jade Crofts continued her impressive recent form by bagging a first half brace to put Ferry in control of the tie. Jess Denscombe extended the advantage shortly after the hour mark, before substitute Lauren Payne struck twice in the final 20 minutes to round off the scoring.

The New Saints completed a set of convincing wins for top flight sides as they triumphed 7-0 away at third tier Cambrian United. Maria Francis-Jones starred in the first half as she set up Olivia Buckland for the opening goal before netting twice herself, with Tiggy Webb also getting on the scoresheet as the visitors went in 4-0 up at the break.

Caitlin Chapman grabbed TNS’ fifth goal early in the second period and while a raft of substitutions slowed the visitors’ momentum somewhat, Yasmin Evans and Kay Baker completed the scoring late on.

Cerys Shipley scored twice as Cwmbran Celtic avoided an upset against Llantwit Fardre. Casey Daniels and Shipley struck in the first half for Celtic, before Shipley grabbed her second goal soon after the break and Georgina Cridland made it 4-0 on 52 minutes.

Carys Woodward pulled a goal back for Llantwit Fardre, but it proved only a consolation as Fiona Anthony netted Celtic’s fifth goal late in the day.
