Honours even in top table clash
Just two points now cover the top five teams in the Barclays Women’s Championship following Sunday’s matches.
The top of the table clash ended with honours even as Charlton Athletic and Sunderland battled out a 1-1 draw. The drama came at the end of the game as Charlton once again scored a late goal, Tegan McGowan giving them the lead, but this time Katy Watson rescued a point for the Wearsiders with an equaliser in injury time.
The draw means that Charlton hold onto the leadership on goal difference from Sunderland, with Southampton replacing Crystal Palace in third after winning their meeting 4-3. Molly Pike and Ella Morris twice put the Saints in front, either side of an equaliser from Aimee Everett, but goals either side of half time from Elise Hughes saw Palace take the lead. Rianna Dean levelled the scores again and with six minutes left, Katie Wilkinson scored the decisive goal which leaves her side just one point off the pace.
Birmingham City continue to close in on the leaders and are the team with momentum following a fifth straight win, 3-1 against Durham Women. Jade Pennock and Ivana Fuso gave the Blues a two-goal lead in the opening half hour, before Eleanor Ryan-Doyle pulled one back for the Wildcats. Remi Allen wrapped up the win for Birmingham when she scored the third goal, midway through the second half.
Sheffield Utd moved themselves towards mid-table when they won 3-1 away to Watford. Jodie Hutton gave United a first half lead which was cancelled out by Harley Bennett, but two goals in a minute from Isobel Goodwin, midway through the second half, earned the Blades a fourth victory of the season.
Defeat for Watford means that Lewes have climbed off the bottom of the table, courtesy of a 2-1 victory against London City Lionesses. Things looked good for the Lionesses when Paige Satchell gave them the lead in the sixteen minute but after the break, the Rookettes got back on level terms with an equaliser from Hollie Olding and Anna Grey completed the turnaround when she scored the winning goal, eleven minutes from time.
The other fixture scheduled for Sunday fell victim to the weather when Blackburn Rovers’ home match with Reading FC Women was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
