Barclays Women’s Championship

Crystal Palace stepped up their title challenge with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Utd which sees them move to within a single point of leaders Sunderland, with a game in hand.

Four matches have been played in the division over the past few days and all were decided by a single goal, with only six scored overall, and maybe the most significant one came as Molly Mae-Sharpe gave Palace three valuable points with seventeen minutes remaining, sealing a third win in a row.

Charlton Athletic received a big setback to their aspirations when they went down to only their second defeat of the season, beaten 1-0 by Reading FC Women who continue to improve. Charlie Wellings scored the only goal of the game for the Royals, three minutes before half time, to give their survival hopes a huge shot in the arm and leave the Addicks still four points off the pace.

On Monday night, Blackburn Rovers played host to Lewes at Ewood Park and went back up into the top half of the table with a 2-1 victory. Hannah Coan opened the scoring for Rovers with six minutes on the clock and Lucy Shepherd sealed the points with the second, ten minutes after the break, despite Hollie Olding pulling one back for the Rookettes.

Sheffield Utd meanwhile put their defeat to Crystal Palace behind them to beat Watford 1-0 on Wednesday night and move themselves into a mid-table position. Defeat for Lewes two days earlier meant that a draw would have taken Watford off the bottom at their expense but they remain at the foot after a tenth minute strike by Tara Bourne earned the Blades a sixth victory of the season.
