Alton on top

Alton 4 BTC Southampton 2

Alton continued their promising start to the Hampshire County League Division Two campaign with a 4-2 home win over BTC Southampton in a entertaining encounter at the Exclusive Networks Stadium.

Goals early in each half gave Alton a lead which was threatened by a spirited BTC side still searching for their first points of the season but the hosts deservedly took all three to claim top place in the early season table.

Tayla Poulter gave Alton a very early lead and they dominated the early exchanges although BTC always presented a threat through Ruby Moss-Birch and Hayley Johnson on the counter. Alton were limited to the occasional scramble in front of goal as they used the full width of the pitch very effectively to get crosses in but BTC defended with purpose to keep the score to one at the break.

Isabella Govinden doubled the advantage soon after the restart, tucking away a neat finish from a right wing cross and when she added the third on 66 minutes it seemed that the home team might carry on to a dominant win. In fact, BTC rallied well and brought the deficit back to a single goal. Moss-Birch converted a penalty on 75 minutes and then Johnson scored with a fine run and low strike into the bottom left corner with five minutes remaining.

Another very good finish, this time by Emilia Robertson, calmed any nerves that the hosts might have felt and restored a two goal lead which probably was a fair reflection of the balance of the match. Both sides competed well but Alton had the slight edge in a good contest.

The sides meet again at the same venue in Cup competition in two weeks time.
