USA start with victory

The United States made it a winning start to their World Cup group matches as two second half goals gave them a hard earned 2-0 victory over Korea DPR.
Lauren Cheney went close to putting the USA ahead early on when she shot straight at Hong Myong Hui after being set up by Abby Wambach. Heather O'Reilly and Wambach then combined to create a chance for Carli Lloyd but her miscued effort was comfortably saved.
The youthful Korean side's best opportunity came ten minutes before half time as an angled shot from Kim Su Gyong was well saved by Hope Solo. Song Jong Sun drove a low cross which just evaded two oncoming players, the Americans immediately counter attacked and Wambach was inches away from reaching a low centre from Amy Rodriguez.
USA stepped up their game after the break and they opened the scoring nine minutes after the restart. Wambach cut inside from the left and crossed for Cheney to apply the finish from close range.
Korea almost equalised on the hour when a long range effort from Ri Ye Gyong beat Solo but clipped the top of the bar. However USA were now in the ascendancy and they doubled their lead when Rachel Buehler drilled home a low shot which found the corner of the net.
A poor refereeing decision denied USA a third goal in injury time when, after Hong Myong Hui had fumbled a shot by Wambach, Megan Rapinoe bundled the ball in but was harshly penalised for a foul on the keeper. It made no difference to the result and the perfect start to the tournament for the former Champions.
