Maidenhead lift Chairman's Cup - 16 May 2011 - Women's Football NewsMaidenhead Utd 2 Southampton Women 0
Maidenhead Utd lifted the Southern Region League Chairman's Cup as two first half goals overcame a spirited Southampton side at Hartley Wintney.
The Berkshire side controlled matters in the first half but needed to stand firm under pressure after the break and goalkeeper Ellie Parker gave an outstanding display which included a penalty save.
Maidenhead took the lead in the opening minutes when a Natalie Barette shot went in off the unfortunate Shereen Cordy.
With strike duo Verity Snow and Tina Brett in sharp form and Lucy Thomson commanding in midfield, Maidenhead continued to look strong and they doubled their lead ahead of the interval when Louise Ekins scored from the penalty spot.
Southampton almost pulled a goal back early in the second half through a dipping shot from Hannah Hewlett which Parker did well to claw around the post for a corner. Cordy then fired a 25-yard shot just over as the Division One side continued to rally.
Maidenhead's attacks were fewer in the second half but, when called upon, Southampton goalkeeper Rachel Cash's handling was faultless under pressure. At the other end, Parker excelled once again with another brilliant save, this time to deny Charlotte Davies after a corner had been half cleared.
Southampton were handed a great opportunity to reduce the arrears when Mel Callaway tripped Vicky Musselwhite in the area and a penalty was awarded. Hewlett stepped up and, although her kick was well struck, Parker dived low to her left to pull off another good save.
Substitute Chloe Rostron went close to adding a third for Maidenhead with a shot on the turn which flew just wide. Southampton did not give up and kept pressing with Musselwhite shooting over and Parker coming off her line to deny Cordy.
Maidenhead defended well to protect their two-goal lead and were deserved winners on the day despite Southampton's best efforts.
