After already completing an unbeaten league season, lifting the title in the process, Liskeard Under-14 Girls now turned their attentions back to the Cornwall County Cup with the prize of being County Champions, when they took on Truro in the Final.
It took a little while for the girls to get use to their surroundings at Newquay AFC's Mount Wise ground but bit by bit they found their feet and after an even first ten minutes they really hit top gear. The first real shot of the game came from Ezme Wells but the keeper was equal to it diving low to make a save.
Molly Walsh was getting great joy down the left wing early on as she used her pace to really get at the Truro right back and finally break the deadlock as she hit a superb strike cutting in on her right foot and looping the ball over the keeper and in at the far post. This goal really gave the girls confidence as the midfield began to play with more freedom as captain Imogen Cooper and Xena Warren got the passing game going for Liskeard.
Liskeard made it two quite soon after with Ezme Wells finding the roof of the net after a mazy run down the right which got her one on one with the keeper. The third goal was all about perseverance as after a scramble in the box Zoe Hewitt rose higher than the keeper to head it over her and the line to add her name to the scoresheet. The new defensive partnership for Liskeard of Amber Jeffery, Ellie Rowe and Alice Gibson was working well for Liskeard as they kept the team squeezed up the pitch and got Liskeard playing football from the back, recent signing Katie Brewer was also adding great steel to the Liskeard midfield as they competed for every ball.
The spectators had barely had chance to get back to the stands for the second half before Liskeard scored a lightning quick goal with Sophie Rogers latching on to a great through ball from Lisa Pearce to round the keeper and put it in the back of the net. Liskeard's dominance of the game gave full backs Chloe Carrubba and Ella Blatchford a licence to get forward a lot more and did well winning the ball high up the pitch for Liskeard.
Liskeard goalkeeper Eleanor Frew had very little to do but dealt with a couple of menacing balls from Truro with great confidence which was now oozing through the team. Melissa Sheppard did a great job leading the line for Liskeard in the second half as Liskeard kept pushing forward. Lisa Pearce then put the game beyond doubt for Liskeard with a hat trick in fifteen minutes, the first with a cracking shot from distance, for the second she rounded the keeper exquisitely and passed it in to the empty net and for the third she flicked the ball on at the near post and past the keeper. In amongst those goals Ezme Wells notched her second with a calmly taken shot under pressure and Sophie Rogers was unlucky not to get herself another goal after her shot went agonisingly over the crossbar as Liskeard ran out more than worthy winners.
Liskeard now have a month to prepare for the Regional Championship in Bristol in May which they move forward to. Liskeard Girls would like to thank their sponsor KRP, the amazing supporters and the brilliant players that make it all happen.
