Wales Under-17 drew 2-2 with group hosts Russia to win their group and qualify for the elite round of the UEFA Under-17 Championships.
In a tightly fought match, Russia took an early lead through a goal from Elmira Piskunova after eight minutes.
Undaunted, Wales replied five minutes later with a goal from captain and prolific scorer Hannah Keryakoplis to level the scores. Keryakoplis went on to hit the bar, and then net a second, from an improbably tight angle, towards the end of the half, bringing her total up to eight goals in the tournament. At half time Wales led 2-1.
The second half saw both teams battle on, but a strong Welsh defence ensured that Wales retained the lead. The leaders came close to putting further points on the scoreboard, with an Ellie Curson cross and a shot from substitute Shanelle Edwards that hit the post.
Wales looked sure to win, until Russia were awarded a penalty in the closing miutes of the match, successfully converted by Ksenia Veselukha, to secure a draw for the hosts.
Wales finish top of Group 10 with seven points and a superior goal difference, and qualify for the elite round of the UEFA Under-17 Championships. Russia finish second in the group and are also almost certain to qualify as one of the best runners-up.
