Wales run riot against Azerbaijan - 22 Aug 2010 - Women's Football NewsWales smashed the record books as they hammered Azerbaijan 15-0 in their final home World Cup qualifying group match in Newtown.
With newly appointed manager Jarmo Matikainen watching on, Wales took the lead after three minutes, Helen Lander finding the net in the first of what was to be a red letter afternoon for the Chelsea striker.
Lander added a second four minutes later, before Gwennan Harries got on the scoresheet and youngster Jasmin Dutton scored her first international goal to make it 4-0 inside the opening twenty minutes.
Lander was in outstanding form and netted three further goals to take the score to seven, and her personal tally to five, ahead of the half time break.
It took ten minutes for Wales to continue the rout after the restart, Harries bagging her second, and Jessica Fishlock joined the goal spree by netting on the hour mark.
Sophie Ingle, winning only her third cap, scored her first goal for Wales five minutes later and Harries completed her hat-trick moments afterwards.
Lander netted her sixth and final goal with twenty minutes remaining but Wales still did not let up from there. Michelle Green came on as a substitute and scored her first international goal in her 49th cap, remarkably the midfielder adding a second just two minutes later. Defender Kerrie Manley rounded off the scoring in the dying minutes to complete a remarkable afternoon for Wales.
Wales head on from here to a completely different challenge on Wednesday as they travel to play Sweden in their final group match.
Wales: Nicola Davies, Erin Vaughan, Jasmin Dutton (sub Lauren Townsend 45mins), Kerrie Manley, Emma Jones, Emma Jones, Katie Daley (sub Josie Green 60mins), Loren Dykes, Sophie Ingle, Helen Lander, Jessica Fishlock, Gwennan Harries (sub Michelle Green 74mins). Subs not used: Sophie Dando, Emma Plewa, Sally Wade, Kylie Davies.

Azerbaijan: Mahesti Musayeva (sub Sevda Nuriyeva 62mins), Irada Guliyeva, Konul Asadova, Matanat Jafarova, Sevinj Jafarzade, Sadagat Valiyeva, Nargiz Pashayeva, Yuliya Larionova (sub Nigar Malokova 39mins), Aygun Girkhlarova, Narmina Mammadova, Parvana Mirzaguliyeva. Subs not used: Tahmina Suleymanzade, Naila Bayaliyeva, Aybaniz Asgarzade, Khayala Azizzade.
