The Football Association of Wales has announced that the FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying match between Wales and Azerbaijan will be played at Latham Park, Newtown on Saturday 21st August 2010.
The match against Azerbaijan is the penultimate game in Wales' qualifying campaign for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, and the last home match, as Wales will then play Sweden away on 25th August. The match in mid-Wales will fittingly round off a campaign in which Wales has already played in the south (Llanelli and Haverfordwest football clubs) and north (Airbus UK Broughton FC) of the country.
The host club has this season been successful in obtaining both the FAW Domestic and UEFA Licences and will continue to play in the Welsh Premier League in the forthcoming season.
Azerbaijan emerged as 2-1 victors against Wales in Baku in October 2009, but currently sit bottom of Group 8, having only played four of their eight group matches to date. The Wales team is currently in fourth place, but with a game in hand over third placed Belgium, a good finishing position in the group is within reach.
The Wales Women's Senior team last played at Latham Park in March 2006, during the last Women's World Cup Qualifying campaign, and secured a 3-0 win over Moldova. As a number of the players involved remain in the current Welsh squad, they will no doubt be happy to return to the scene of this previous victory. The kick off time will be announced shortly.
