Saltash United v Yeovil Town - 7 Nov 2009 - Women's Football NewsF.A.Women's Cup - Road to the Final
Saltash Utd won a well contested game, 2-0 against University of Portsmouth thanks to goals from Coral Smith and Sam Drewery. The Ashes were rewarded with a home tie in the First Round, against South West Combination table toppers Yeovil Town.
Yeovil have moved their way up the pyramid in recent seasons since the appointment of Steve Phelps as manager. In that time, they have won the Somerset County Cup - beating Keynsham Town in the Final - as well as the South West League and Pat Sowden Trophy before finishing in third and fourth in their two seasons back at Combination League level.
During the past five years, the ambitious Somerset club have increased their number of teams and now operate five youth sides as well as two teams at senior level. The first team currently sit on top of the South West Combination whilst the reserves won the Somerset County League title last season.
Steve Phelps is assisted by Nigel Wolfe with Coach Sarah Lawler, who is also first team captain. Chris White runs the reserves whilst Ali King (Secretary) and David Mills (Chairman) also make valuable contributions. The team has been free scoring this season with the likes of Jemma Tewksbury, Lyndsey Roe, Amy Wild, Anusia Rourke and Kayleigh Nardiello regularly on the scoresheet. The squad also includes Rachel Simkin and Sarah Roxburgh who have experience in the top flight. The club's main target is to reach the National Division as soon as possible.
This match, at the Kimberley Stadium, promises to be a fascinating clash between two clubs who have made big strides in recent years. Yeovil will start as favourites but Saltash are sure to relish a chance to take on higher league opposition.
