Wales beaten in Azerbaijan - 29 Oct 2009 - Women's Football NewsWales went down to their second narrow defeat in four days as they lost 2-1 to Azerbaijan in their World Cup qualifying group match in Baku.
Wales were dealt a blow before the game as captain Jayne Ludlow was ruled out through injury and experienced midfielder Michelle Green was also missing, resulting in starting places for Emma Plewa and Cheryl Foster whilst Emma Jones wore the armband.
Just before the half hour mark, Wales took the lead when Helen Lander burst through to slot home.
However the lead lasted just four minutes as Ana Atayeva levelled the scores for the home side and Azerbaijan then went ahead moments before half time through Olga Kaziyeva.
Wales were unable to level the scores after the break and therefore suffered their third odd-goal defeat in four matches.
Wales: Rhian Nokes, Sally Wade (sub Sharla Passiarello 84mins), Lauren Townsend (sub Jasmin Dutton 79mins), Kerrie Manley, Emma Jones, Katie Daley, Emma Plewa, Cheryl Foster, Helen Lander, Gwennan Harries, Jessica Fishlock. Subs not used: Sophie Dando, Sophie Ingle, Katie Williams, Alicia Powe.
