Spartans step up challenge
 Women's Football News 7 May 2009
Spartans moved to within two points of SWPL leaders Glasgow City with a 7-0 victory over Hamilton Academicals.
The Edinburgh side got off to a flying start when Debbie McWhinnie latched onto a Hayley Lauder through ball to fire them in front and Diana Barry lobbed home the second just after the quarter hour. Shortly before half time, McWhinnie made it three as she headed home an inch perfect cross from Lauder.
McWhinnie completed her hat-trick two minutes after the restart when scoring direct from a corner and Julie Melrose added the fifth with a 20-yard strike. Lauder was again involved in the next goal, this time her cross being converted at the far post by Tricia McLaughlin whose corner set up the final goal, full back Shelley Faughnan netting with a bullet header.
