Arsenal received a boost to their title ambitions on Thursday night as they won 3-1 away to Birmingham City whilst rivals Everton were held to a goalless draw by Leeds Carnegie.
The Gunners went into the game against the in-form Blues on the back of their first league defeat for more than five years, but normal business was resumed at Redditch as Kim Little bagged a first half double to put them two ahead at the break.
Birmingham pulled themselves back into the game three minutes after the restart when Maz Gauntlett set up Becky Hall to score but Arsenal sealed the win with seventeen minutes remaining, Ciara Grant netting with a firm downward header from Gemma Davison's corner.
Everton meanwhile saw their 14-match winning run come to an end and dropped their first points of the season in their draw with Leeds.
Emily Westwood came closest for the Toffees with a chip onto the roof of the net, whilst Sue Smith had the best opportunity for the hosts, but neither side could break the deadlock.
Arsenal therefore lead Everton by eight points having played three games more and each remaining game now takes on extra signifance including their return meeting, the date of which is yet to be announced.
