Reading FC Women were handed a gift this week as the Reading FC first team squad has donated £3,000 toward the running of the ladies team.
Following promotion last year, Reading were placed in the Northern Division this season, with overnight trips as far afield as Newcastle, Sheffield and so on. This placed a huge financial burden on the set up, but the Reading first team, led by Graeme Murty, stepped in generously to help with running costs.
Director Of Women's Football Lee Herron said: "We are absolutely delighted and extremely grateful to the entire squad for their generosity.
"Graeme is regularly involved with the women's team, he comes to watch our games and is very proactive.
"Obviously with us being in the Northern Division it added huge costs this season, so he went about asking the players to donate money and they raised £3,000.
"For them to support us in this way is just fantastic and the gesture has been received brilliantly right throughout the entire girls' set up.
"I don't know of this type of gesture happening at any other football club, and it's credit to the players for doing it. This is recognition of how important women's football is here, and the effort that goes in from all concerned."
Lee and Graeme were joined on the pitch at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday by senior players Natasha Caswell and Kelly Chambers (pictured).
