Hannon hat-trick helps Wednesday - 17 Oct 2008 - Women's Football NewsSheffield Wednesday lifted themselves off the bottom of the Northern Division by winning 4-2 away to Rotherham Utd.
The home side opened the scoring through former Wednesday striker Sarah Smith's long range chip on 20 minutes. Beth Gingell levelled with a strike from the edge of the area after a corner was only partially cleared and Bridie Hannon gave Wednesday an interval advantage which she increased to 4-1 as she completed her hat trick in the second half.
Charlie Whiteley saved Rachel Skeemer's penalty to prevent a fifth for Wednesday and after Lynn Goodman's chip made it 4-2 Rotherham pressed strongly, being denied by the bar and also some sterling defence in an action packed finale.
