Kelly Clarke netted the only goal of the game as Aston Villa inflicted a first defeat of the season on OOH Lincoln in the Northern Division.
A win would have taken the Lady Imps back to the top of the table but instead Manchester City, who did not play, retain their two point lead.
Sunderland are now the only unbeaten team left in the division and they moved into third place after scoring five without reply away to Sheffield Wednesday. Nicola Devine opened the scoring for the Black Cats with Natalie Gutteridge adding a second before half time. With fifteen minutes remaining, Gutteridge completed her double and further goals from Abby Holmes and Sophie Williams rounded off the win.
Newcastle Utd moved into the top half as their long, long journey to Reading FC Women ended in a 2-1 victory. Melanie Reay's fifth minute strike for the Magpies was cancelled out on the hour by Natasha Caswell, but Rachel Furness settled matters with the winner for Newcastle, fifteen minutes from time.
Preston North End registered their first points of the season with a 4-1 success at Rotherham Utd. After a goalless first half, Kerry Longstone put Rotherham in front but Louise Cafferkey quickly equalised and Hannah Bailey then sent Preston ahead. Goals in the dying minutes from Laura Walker and Gemma Watson secured three welcome points for the Lancashire side.
