The summer of 2005 has been an unforgettable one so far for Karen Carney and the winger still has another chance to land European glory with her country before the new season starts.
Only five weeks after starring for England during Euro 2005, Karen, who turns 18 early next month, is a key member of the England under-19 squad which takes part in the UEFA Under-19 Championships in Hungary and she admits that this had been her initial target twelve months ago.
"We've only had a week off," says Karen, "but I'm not complaining. Euro 2005 was a really good experience - we tried really hard and what happened was unfortunate - and hopefully we can do better here. To go with the seniors was great but this tournament was what I was aiming for.
"It's a bit weird being back with the under-19s," she added. "But these are the girls I have played with since I was 14 and I just want to do my best."
As well as becoming one of the most recognised players in the women's game in this country, Karen has also been extremely busy by squeezing in revision for her A-levels during the Euro 2005 Finals, as well as passing her driving test at the first attempt. "It's the first time I've gone anywhere without my school bag," she laughs. "But it's a great achievement for me to be selected for this tournament and to be with the girls who helped us here."
