Cardiff all set for UEFA Cup challenge
 Women's Football News 10 Jul 2004
Cardiff all set for UEFA Cup challenge - 10 Jul 2004 - Women's Football NewsCardiff City are already back in training, preparing for their trip to Poland to compete in the UEFA Women's Cup later this month. The squad of eighteen boasts a mixture of experience and youth.
Four current Welsh senior internationals are included in the squad - Caroline Cooper, Sian Cheedy, Helen Jones and Charlotte Miller. They also boast under-16 and under-19 Welsh internationals in Kayleigh Green, Jessica Fishlock, Chantelle Miller and Gwennan Harries. Also going along for the experience are youth players Kayleigh Horder, Sophie Ford and Sarah Johnson.
One player glad to be making the trip is striker Charlotte Preen, who missed last season's European exploits due to a knee ligament injury that, at one point, threatened to end her footballing career. Having worked hard to regain fitness, Charlotte has not only returned to football but fought her way back into the senior team, netting a few important goals at the end of last season to help Cardiff lift the South West Combination League title.
City will open their campaign on 20th July against the hosts AZS Wroclaw, followed by their other group matches against Ukraine title winners Metallist Kharkov two days later and KI Klaksvik of the Faroe Islands on the 24th. The focus will be to become the first Welsh club to qualify for the next round of ANY European tournament, but the group matches will also be valuable preparation for their return to the Premier League, in the Southern Division.
They will be hoping to improve on last season's third place in the First Qualifying Round, and that the experience gained last time will allow them to adjust to the European style of football.
Coach Michele Adams stated: "We are looking forward to the challenge, it will be a great experience for the girls and we are confident that we can go out there and do really well."
Cardiff City UEFA Women's Cup squad: Julie Brealy, Kayleigh Green, Samantha Gaunt, Sian Cheedy, Caroline Cooper, Jessica Fishlock, Helen Jones, Charlotte Miller, Chantelle Miller, Gwennan Harries, Marie Barrow, Charlotte Preen, Kath Kavanagh, Victoria Evans, Fern Burrage, Kayleigh Horder, Sophie Ford, Sarah Johnson. Manager: Michele Adams, Staff: Karen Jones, Andrea Powell, Tina Curry, Debbie Ball. Physio: Jackie Zaslona.
