UEFA Women’s Champions League

All three Barclays WSL teams have made it through to the quarter finals after each side recorded victories in the latest round
of group fixtures this week, but Celtic’s last remaining hopes of qualifying have come to an end.

Chelsea took on Celtic at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night knowing that a point would virtually guarantee their place in the last eight and they got off to the best possible start when, in the second minute, Lucy Bronze gave them the lead by volleying in a Catarina Macario cross, Kelsey Daugherty being unable to keep the ball out. Another corner led to the second goal, this time ending with Guro Reiten’s centre being nodded home by Wieke Kaptein. Chelsea continued to dominate matters during the second half but Celtic defended well until the Blues secured a 3-0 win in injury time, when Shannon McGregor was penalised for handball in the area and Eve Perisset scored her first goal for the club from the resulting penalty.

Manchester City meanwhile travelled to Hammarby on Thursday night and, having won all three previous games, were in a similar situation to that of Chelsea regarding qualification. They took the lead just after the half hour as Khadija Shaw cut in from the left before her shot took a deflection and looped over a helpless Anna Tamminen for the opening goal. City took their advantage into half time but three minutes after the restart, Hammarby were back on level terms as Julie Blakstad’s cross was stroked home by Ellen Wangerheim. Parity did not last long though, and City were back in front in spectacular fashion just four minutes afterwards, Shaw thumping an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area for her second goal.

Arsenal played host to Juventus and went into the game in the knowledge that if they repeated their victory over the Italian champions in their previous meeting, they would advance to the last eight. The Gunners grew stronger and stronger as the game went on but Juventus stood firm despite the efforts of the home side. It began to look as though it was going to be a frustrating night for Arsenal until two minutes from time, when the lively Stina Blackstenius produced a low ball into the area which found former Juventus striker Lina Hurtig, who applied the finish against her old club from close range to send Arsenal into the quarter finals.

Arsenal’s win therefore meant that a single nation will have three teams in the quarter finals for the first time.
